“Housework can’t kill you, but why take a chance?”- Phyllis Diller
As the days grow longer and the first hints of spring emerge, many of us feel a renewed sense of energy and motivation to tackle the task of spring cleaning. But before you dive into scrubbing and decluttering every nook and cranny of your home, it’s essential to ensure that your cleaning supplies are organized and easily accessible. After all, there’s nothing more frustrating than searching high and low for a bottle of glass cleaner or a spare sponge when you’re in the midst of a cleaning frenzy. With a little planning and organization, you can streamline your spring cleaning routine and make the process more efficient and enjoyable. Here’s how to get started.
1. Assess Your Inventory
Begin by taking stock of your cleaning supplies and assessing what you have on hand. Gather all of your cleaning products, tools, and equipment from around the house and lay them out in a designated area. Check expiration dates and dispose of any expired or unused items, as well as any products that have deteriorated or become ineffective over time.
2. Streamline Your Supplies
Pare down your cleaning arsenal to the essentials—the products and tools you use regularly to clean your home. Keep multipurpose cleaners, microfiber cloths, sponges, scrub brushes, and rubber gloves on hand for everyday cleaning tasks. Consider donating or discarding specialized products that you rarely use or that duplicate the functions of other items in your collection.

3. Invest in Storage Solutions
Once you’ve whittled down your cleaning supplies to the essentials, invest in storage solutions that will help keep everything neat, organized, and easily accessible. Consider using a caddy or tote to corral frequently used items so you can carry them from room to room as you clean. Utilize bins, baskets, or drawers to store supplies in cabinets or closets, keeping like items together for quick retrieval.

4. Designate a Cleaning Zone
Create a designated cleaning zone in your home where you can store all of your cleaning supplies in one centralized location. This could be a closet, pantry, or cabinet located near the areas of your home that require the most frequent cleaning attention. Keep your cleaning supplies organized and neatly arranged within this zone to streamline your cleaning routine and minimize clutter in other areas of your home.

5. Label & Categorize
Use labels or clear storage containers to categorize and organize your cleaning supplies by type or function. Label shelves or bins with categories such as “All-Purpose Cleaners,” “Bathroom Supplies,” “Floor Care,” and “Dusting Tools” to make it easy to find what you need at a glance. We really like how many cleaning supplies and containers are more sustainable and reusable now. Consider swapping out some of your one-time-use cleaners for refillable ones. This makes your labeling and categorizing even more effective long-term!

6. Backstock zone
Set up a refill station within your cleaning zone where you can replenish supplies as needed. We professional organizers often call this “backstock”. Keep a stockpile of refillable cleaning products such as spray bottles, concentrated cleaners, and bulk-sized containers of your favorite cleaning solutions. This will save you time and money in the long run and ensure that you never run out of essential supplies mid-cleaning session.
7. Rotate Seasonal Supplies
As you embark on your spring cleaning spree, take the opportunity to rotate seasonal cleaning supplies and tools into your regular rotation. Swap out heavy-duty winter cleaners for lighter spring formulations, and replace worn-out or damaged tools with fresh replacements. Consider adding seasonal items such as window cleaner, outdoor furniture cleaner, or allergy-friendly cleaning products to your arsenal as needed.

8. Maintain
Once you’ve organized your cleaning supplies for spring cleaning, make a commitment to maintaining their organization throughout the year. Set aside time each month to tidy up your cleaning zone, restock supplies, and reassess your inventory to ensure that you have everything you need for upcoming cleaning tasks. By staying proactive and consistent, you can ensure that your cleaning routine remains efficient and stress-free year-round.
